The Neurobiology of Trauma

Being Trauma Informed Training Program

This program forms the foundation of Being Trauma Informed, as every program we run is grounded in the science of how trauma affects the brain. You’ll learn about the process your brain uses to deal with threat, the various possible reactions we can have to threat, and the impact trauma plays on both.

Depending on the specific focus (see below), you may also learn the basics about memory and how trauma affects our ability to remember. The program uses videos and audience interaction to keep folks engaged. You’ll leave with a lightbulb on about why folks react the way they do to trauma, and depending on the focus, specific ways you can increase your effectiveness when working with those affected by trauma.

The program can be customized to deliver accessible science from a short 60 minute keynote to an entire 6 hour day of training. When combined with other programs, a dynamic two-day training can be provided.

When the program focuses on sexual assault, the curriculum may include information on bias; credibility analysis; dissociative and immobility responses; fragmented memory; and, sensory based memory.

When the program focuses on domestic violence, the curriculum may include information on why non-physical abuse is often just as, if not more, damaging than physical abuse; why the abuse often feels constant, even when the abuser isn’t present; and, the impact of the abuse on one’s ability to function day to day.

When the program focuses on trafficking, the curriculum may include information on how coercion can end up feeling like choice; the impact abuse by the trafficker has on the brain of the victim; and, why it can be so challenging long term for victims trying to start over. If requested and available, this training will be co-facilitated by Rebekah Charleston, nationally recognized speaker and trafficking survivor.
